Originally designed as a fortified house in the 1300s, it was later expanded in the 17th century before undergoing extensive renovations in the 19th century under Sir Charles Barry, who was also responsible for designing London’s Houses of Parliament. These renovations gave Dunrobin its current French chateau appearance, blending medieval architecture with Renaissance elegance.
The castle is surrounded by sprawling gardens and grounds that are as impressive as the structure itself. Inspired by Versailles’ gardens in France, these meticulously maintained gardens feature manicured lawns, ornamental fountains, and an array of colorful flowers that bloom throughout spring and summer. The castle also houses a museum containing artifacts from around the world collected by members of the Sutherland family during their travels.
